Thailand has left a lasting impression on me. I spent six months in the north in Nong Khai completing an internship with an NGO where I lived and worked alongside locals and people from all over the world. It gave me the chance to experience the country, its people, its culture and its amazing food up close. After my time in the north I knew I wanted to see another side of Thailand, the south with its beaches, islands and tropical atmosphere. When I finally made it to Bangkok my first choice was Krabi, and it turned out to be the perfect decision. I really enjoyed my time there, especially exploring the islands and soaking up the laid back vibe. In this post I will share my experience in Krabi and hope it inspires you to discover this beautiful part of Thailand for yourself.
Recommendations for hotels, homestays, or Airbnbs are best centered either in Krabi Town or in Ao Nang, ideally right by the sea. Krabi Town offers a more local, laid-back atmosphere with budget-friendly options and easy access to transport and tours. Ao Nang, on the other hand, is the main beach hub, perfect for those who want to stay close to the ocean, enjoy lively nightlife, and have quick access to island-hopping adventures. Whether you're looking for a cozy homestay, a stylish Airbnb, or a beachfront resort, both areas provide great bases for exploring the beauty of Krabi.
Day 1 – Arrival & First Impressions
The easiest way to get to Krabi is by flying from Bangkok Don Mueang Airport, with a flight time of just about an hour. Once you arrive, getting into town is simple. You can take a Grab or a regular taxi directly from outside the terminal. A Grab usually costs around 300 to 350 Baht, which is about 8 to 10 dollars, and the ride takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.
Depending on your arrival time, you can plan the rest of your day at an easy pace. If you are staying in Krabi Town, you will find a relaxed and local atmosphere with night markets, street food and plenty of small shops and cafés to explore. If you have chosen Ao Nang, you will be closer to the sea, with beach bars, restaurants and a more lively, touristy vibe.
Once you have checked in, take some time to stretch your legs and get your first impression of the area. In Krabi Town, you can walk along the Mangrove Walkway, continue on the promenade to the Mud Crab Sculpture and stop by Thara Park. If you are still up for more, the HM Lanta War Ship Museum and the pier are also worth a quick visit.
In the evening, you can head to the night market for dinner, treat yourself to a Thai massage or just relax with a drink at one of the local bars. Before calling it a day, it is also a good idea to check which island tours you would like to join over the next few days. The easiest way to book them is usually through your hotel or homestay.

Day 2 – 4 Islands Tour & Railay Bay
Day two is all about exploring the islands. Most hotels will arrange your pick-up between 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning, whether you are staying in Krabi Town or Ao Nang. Once you arrive at the beach meeting point, you will pay the 200 Baht national park fee and be assigned to your boat.
You can choose between a longtail boat or a speedboat, depending on your budget and preference. A longtail boat costs around 800 Baht per person plus the park fee, while a speedboat is about 1000 Baht plus the same fee.
The tour includes several stops, each with its own charm. Tup Island and Chicken Island are quick stops, perfect for photos and a short walk along the sandbanks that appear at low tide. Poda Island is where you will have lunch and time to swim, relax or simply enjoy the view of the turquoise water. The last stop is Railay Bay, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs and beautiful beaches, a true highlight of the day.
You will be back at your hotel by around three in the afternoon, with plenty of time for a swim, a stroll through town or a relaxed dinner to end the day.

Day 3 – Phi Phi Islands & Maya Bay
Day three takes you to one of Thailand’s most famous destinations – the Phi Phi Islands. This tour is slightly longer and a bit more expensive than the previous one, but it is absolutely worth it.
You will travel by speedboat, with tickets costing around 1400 Baht per person plus a 400 Baht national park fee. The ride takes about 45 minutes, and once you arrive, you will quickly see why these islands are so well known.
The main highlight is Maya Bay, the stunning lagoon made famous by the movie The Beach. You will also have two snorkeling stops, where you can dive into crystal-clear water and see colourful fish and coral up close – it is definitely one of the best parts of the day.
Lunch is served on Phi Phi Don, the larger island, with a buffet offering both Asian and Western dishes. And yes, if you are craving something familiar, you will even find a 7/11, Burger King and McDonald’s here.
Pick-up is usually in the morning, and you will return to your hotel by late afternoon, around five or six. It is a full day on the water, packed with incredible scenery and unforgettable moments.

Three days in Krabi were exciting and gave me a great first impression of the region but honestly they were not enough. I would have loved to stay longer maybe spend a full beach day at Ao Nang, join another island tour or even spend one or two nights on Phi Phi Island before moving on. If you have the time I would recommend planning 4 to 5 days in Krabi. That way you can combine sightseeing and island hopping with proper relaxation. From here it is also easy to continue your journey towards Phuket or head south to Ko Lanta another beautiful island that is absolutely worth a visit.
